Typography Workshop

Updated: Mar 20, 2019

No Chairs?

Hands on.

We was asked to buy a newspaper over the Weekend, so I went to the shop and grabbed a Daily Mail. Entering the class there was no chairs, just tables, glue, and A1 sheets of paper.

We had to fold the paper in half and collage type from our newspaper in two separate ways, chaos and order. We then cut the sheet in half and kept folding and cutting until we had collages all A5 and A6 pieces.

From this we went around the class looking to steal 2 mini collages from other students that caught our eye. Using the collage as a base for a poster composition, we took paper rolls full of quotes by Jan Tschichold and cut and created a collage of one full quote on an A1 piece of paper, into the same composition as one of the mini collages we stole, to create our very own Jan Tschichold style poster collage.

Expanding on our collage we worked on translating our traditional poster to digital using InDesign The rules we had to follow were regarding font, weight, and leading. We was introduced to the principles of typography using fundamental rules. Recreating our poster we had to think about White Space and how we can use block shapes and visual direction to promote the exhibition text we had to promote on our poster. I was told not to create anything too fancy after playing around with different solid curves i tried to make my idea simpler than ever by using a simple corner block design to bond the fonts together in the corner of the page, leaving white space so the viewer has an instant spot to catch their eye.

I enjoyed this workshop as it was very hands on and creative using simple and effective rules to reign us in.
