Steve Stacey Project.

We started the task by Steve Stacey taking us through a presentation of his process creating the artwork for 'Nothing But Thieves - Broken Machine' album.

The process Steve Stacey took us through was from brief, understanding the insight, research on to the process development.

Beginning with understanding the album and the title broken machine, he broke down what he understood for the insight of the brief and not to go with a cliche image of a broken machine. He started to research broken statues and pottery coming across an Asian art form called Kintsugi, which is breaking pottery and smoulding it back together with gold, creating this luminous glow in between the cracks creating a more beautiful piece.

He went on to how he could portray this on a person, researching black on black photography and white on white photography. Creating and presenting his idea as quick mock ups he designed on Photoshop he presented his idea and it was accepted to move forward. The next process was development, researching, what model frame size for the images, complexion, style of image he had in mind. Once doing this he trialled and tested make up on the model but it did not work, he took photos of all different body parts from different angles and the Kintsugi effect was then added on in post production.

The process of this creation was dominantly research based and this was the key statement of Steve Stacey's project.

We then went on to pairing up and picking a band or artist name out of a hat.

I teamed up with Zach and the band we received was 'FOALS'.

We then had to research and gain as much information about our Band as possible.

The next step was choosing out of a list of multiple mundane subjects, such as: 'Buy One Get One Free', 'Morning Commute', English Breakfast', 'All You Can Eat' and use that as the brief name for a new upcoming album.

Our task was to take the band and subject and create some artwork for an album campaign, but not using a conventional advertisement, just using the communication of the subject.

The subject we chose was 'All You Can Eat'. We went on to researching our subject, the type, the overall visual communication and what we think 'All You Can Eat' expresses in the same light as 'FOALS'.

After our research we decided to create a venn diagram to lock in all of the similarities between our band and subject.

We came to the conclusion that collections was a big part of FOALS personality and that All You Can Eat is a rebellious form of personal food, you choose what you like, how much you like and you collect it on a plate.

Insight: A collection of personality.

Once creating our mood boards we decided a collection of items piled on a plate, looking rough and edgy suited the characteristics of both of our subjects.

We looked at different angles we could photograph a plate from.

Using Foals of personal interests and fighting personality, we went on to create our first draft album cover, we decided to call it Tour Bar Blues after their food blog, but upon receiving feedback the name had to stay 'All You Can Eat'.

We also looked at other ways the pile of food could be portrayed.

After recieving our feedback we decided to go on to changing the name back and using the font used by FOALS in majority of their albums.

We also looked into the back of the Album cover, which we decided could be portrayed as a menu.

I went on to see how the album covers would look on a mock up, creating a bite mark in the CD to add more emphasis on the 'All You Can Eat'.

We then looked into a campaign at how this could be promoted over several platforms using different plates of collections.
