Shakespeare RE:Loaded

Updated: Dec 13, 2018

We was presented our next brief, called Shakespeare RE:Loaded, where we are going to generate a series of advertisements or a campaign in Waterloo station to appeal to contemporary London.

Upon receiving this brief we was adviced to go on and research the story of Romeo and Juliet and try to interpret the key themes of the play. Going fourth from this advice I read the script of the play, listened to the script and watched the modern representation by Baz Luhrmann.

Understanding the play further the themes that stood out to me which i discovered were; Dutiful Love, Fate, Isolation, Mortality, Society at war, Unobtainable Love.

We had to present our ideas using moodboards to describe our themes and how we can relate them to contemporary London.

These are the mood boards of the themes I presented.

Dutiful Love - Identified from the fact Romeo and Juliet were so connected but yet so distant, torn between there duties of their family house name and there love. I compared this to students in relationships travelling to separate universities, who are also bound between their duty and love.

Fate - Romeo and Juliet's love was always destined to end badly and their choices in life lead them to their demise, they are held back from being free and making their love life easy, this compares to council estates in the way they are held back and have more bad choices than good.

Isolation - Romeo gets banished from Verona and is then isolated from his home. There is a lot of homelessness in London and people are isolated from society.

Mortality - Death is apparent in Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet and in this story, depression comes with death and mental health issues.

Society At War - Capulet and Montague are at war constantly, such as conservatives and labour.

Unobtainable Love - Romeo is in love with Roseline who does not love him back and is unobtainable for Romeo. I used this to compare to celebrity crushes, or character crushes who are unobtainable.
