"We Draw, We Animate & We Make Stuff!" - (Rude 1998)
We was joined by Abi Meats from illustration, animation and product studio, Rude. Rude has an extensive portfolio of illustrations from adverts to a unique clothing brand. They started rude and opened their doors in 1998 and have since grown into a print based art studio, with a great client list including British Airways, Absolut, BBC and Veolia. (Rude 1998)
Abi is using her experience in the industry to build our skills and creative judgement. In this session she took us through some exercises using illustrator that enabled us to translate our photographs into vector imagery. We started our practise with some basic adobe illustrator skills, playing with a pre-made character designed by Adrian Johnson. Using these skills we was shown how to create our own character using the shape tools, pen tools and colour swatches.
For my photograph I decided to play on the use of the low poly mask and create a flat colour poly vector of the mask. Using the pen tool i drew the mask on my photo and used flat colours to compliment the different shapes. I created a half body image covering the original photo with the vector mask as my own version of a Charlotte Caron design, complimented with a woodland backdrop with an overlay of the red lights and the lines on the back sheet to give that stage show feel.
I also used the vector image of my mask in a more minimalist way surfaced on a white background and two solid shadows to highlight the mask and portray movement.
I will be using this mask as my key image for my brand, to help create my unique iconic image.
Moving further with my illustrations, i edited my other photograph. I decided to flatten my image and design a face forward image of my mask. I chose to make my design a flat blue and red composition, my blue and red is highlighted in my imagery. Red being strong and my partners favourite colour, blue being light, elegant and representing movement.
